Best in Show?
Dobermans with unaltered ears are beautiful.
The Westminster Dog Show just announced its latest winner, and you have to wonder where their priorities lie. The organization’s mission “enhances the lives of all dogs,” “celebrates the companionship of dogs,” and “promotes responsible dog ownership.” But they seem to be doing the opposite.
This year’s winner? Penny, whose ears and tail were intentionally cut to “improve” her appearance.
Ear cropping involves cutting off part of a dog’s ears to modify their shape. The practice is so inhumane it’s illegal in several countries, including most of Europe. The American Veterinary Medical Association opposes it, as do several other veterinary associations. Tail docking is equally cruel and unnecessary. The tail is partially amputated in a painful procedure, either surgically or with a band that constricts blood flow to the end of the tail.
Side note: No surprise – the American Kennel Club (AKC) supports ear cropping and tail docking. Despite their misleading image, they actively lobby against protections for animals. Read more about the AKC’s dubious actions.
Powerful organizations like Westminster have the ability to promote positive change within the dog breeding industry, and advocate for dogs in need. Instead, they are making the problem worse. What has a dog won if “winning” requires agonizing pain?
