The Comedian

Not possibly guilty – after getting into mischief, Rasta always gave us the best smiles. It allowed her to get away with everything.

I had carried the groceries into the house and put them away, but couldn’t find the new bag of flour I was certain I had bought. I went back out to the car, but there were no forgotten bags of food. Convinced I had forgotten the flour at the store, I headed into the living room to move on with the day.

Our dog Rasta was lounging on the couch, looking at me innocently with her big brown eyes… but her newly white face told me what had happened with the flour. One of my great regrets in life was not stopping to take a photo of the flour thief before setting out to clean the white cloud of dust that had exploded all over the room.

With a houseful of dogs with differing needs, two people with busy jobs, a garden to weed, meals to cook, and errands to run, efficiency is key in our house.

The bed gets made in a hurry each morning, and we don’t exactly take the time to tuck in the corners. Except for one day, when one of us slowed down and made the bed neatly (most likely, company was coming). The sheets were folded down, and in lieu of the decorative pillows about to be added, Rasta included her own touch – a dirty shoe, placed with care. She had artfully added the perfect accessory…

Rasta was always good for a laugh, sometimes without meaning to. When I did my core strength workouts, she joined me, following along with the exercises. I never knew if she was mocking me or working on her six pack, but either way, I appreciated her company.
